ok 1.make sure your hair is washed ....its easier

2.get it dry before you straighten it

3.get some kind of heat protection....(i use silk elements heat protecto)(at sally's beauty supplies)

4.pick up about 1/3 of your hair and put it up with a clip

5.spraya section of the section that is down with some heat protector and skim the straigtner slowly.!!!!!!!

6.keep reapeting 4 and 5 with the other sections

Call an upscale saloon for the brand names of some good hair straightening products to put in your hair before you use a straightening iron. To properly straighten your own hair, would take up to 2 hrs. Straighten a very small section at a time starting with the back of your head. Place a rubber band in the unstaightened part to keep it out of the way.

Okay the only reason I could think of it getting poofy is becuz you didnt plug it in and let it heat up for about 10 minutes, so try that and if you already did that then uh oh crappy flat iron so try to return it
