I read in Seventeen that you can turn coarse african american hair into super sleek straight hair. It says that you use a ceramic straightener (which I have) and a special straightening lotion. What one should I use to get super sleek smooth hair, and can you tell me what it does?

well motions is a good one but my favorite is called breakthru. It protects your hair from the heat and makes it really straight. But if you have really coarse hair you should blow dry it then straighten it to get the best results.

I straighten my hair after I blow dry it straight because it decreases the "poofiness"/thickness of my hair.

I don't think you should do it because you hear other people doing it, especially since it seems like you don't have a particular purpose.

a lot of people do it if they're going out or whatever (sometimes even straight hair will get fly aways and messy if your out dancing!) but I wouldn't suggest using it on a daily basis and saving it for going out because it will really dry out your hair

if your thinking of buying one I suggest a professional cremaric straightener that you can get at salons and using it on a very low setting to minimize damage

Using an iron on straight hair will help control poofiness and make it more sleek/shiny. I have naturally wavy hair, so I blow dry it straight after I shower. Even though it's already straight after that, I still use the straightener to make my hair look thinner and sleeker. I use the Chi straightening iron, and it works awesome. Its a little pricy, but I've been using it for over 5 years and i don't know what I'd do without it. If you're going to use a straightener, I would highly recommend buying some frizz control for your hair and run it through your hair before you straighten it. It will help your hair from frizzing, and it will also help protect your hair in the long-run. I recommend CHI Silk Serum, it works great.

get a moisturizin shampoo and conditioner and leave in conditioner (try the sunsilk hairapy hydra tlc system- the bottles r hot pink). then before u staighten, use the garnier fructise shine spray because it helps protect ur hair, but dont use too much or the serum cuz it will make ur hair look greasy. also, be sure to get regular trims...

I also had a bad result from a professional straightner, they never work for me. My first bit of advice is to get a trim, nothing major, but try to trim the damaged ends off (make sure it is done by a pro, cutting it yourself can only make it worse). Actually, as soon as you can, use an intensive moisturizing treatment on your hair. They have split ends treatments out there too, I know Tresemme used to make one and I heard wonderful things about it.

Now, the best thing is to let your hair heal. The more you do to it, the longer it will take. If you insist on straightening your still, get a wet to straight straightner so you cut out blow drying. Make sure it has ceramic plates and that it mentions less damage. I have a Remington, and it cost $30, it is nice.
