Are there side affects to chemically straightening your hair and what are they?

i am thinking of getting my hair straigtened can you tell me if and how it damages your hair?

Well if done right, what we call Japanese Hair Straightening shouldn't damage your hair at all, but as always, depends on who is doing your hair.

I should add that Japanese Hair Straightening does not work well on very coarse African hair or Asian Hair, and it can be an expensive procedure.
